MY MONTHLY FAVOURITES: JUNE 2020

Pinch, punch, first day of the month! I can't believe it's July already...

Despite the fact that June is one of the most jam-packed months for me, I am always surprised by how quickly it flies by. So, today I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on my favourite month of the year and share some of my favourite things that I've discovered in the month of June!

JUNE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • My first ever lockdown birthday! I turned 19 this June and had some wonderful (and socially distanced) celebrations, filled with cocktails, cake and amazing company.

  • There were 4 other birthdays for me to celebrate this month, which meant even more cake and getting the chance to catch up with friends that I haven't seen for ages!

  • I attended my first ever local protest. Despite this arising from incredibly sad and shocking circumstances, it was amazing to see so many people from my home town coming together to fight against racism and injustice.

  • My writing was published! In June I received confirmation that an article I had submitted to a new online zine was going to be published, and you can read that article here!

FAVOURITE SONGS:

Rose Rouge by Jorja Smith (released 9th June 2020)

This cover of St Germain's 'Rose Rouge' is unlike Jorja Smith's other records but her voice compliments the jazzy beat behind this track perfectly, so much so that I actually prefer this cover to the original! This track was on repeat for the whole of June and I suspect it will be for many months to come.

Soul Control by Jessie Ware (released 26th June 2020)

Jessie Ware has just released her new album, titled 'What's Your Pleasure?'

In my opinion, every song on this album is nothing short of a masterpiece, but I think Soul Control has to be my favourite track. It's four minutes of disco heaven and the perfect poppy summer song. What more could you want?

Breathe Deeper by Henry Hall (released 18th June 2020)

Henry Hall released his version of Tame Impala's 'Breathe Deeper' on his YouTube channel back in May. However, on June 18th he added it to his latest album, which consists of 5 covers (you can stream it here). All streaming proceeds are donated to BLMLA. This is an amazing cover for an amazing cause!

FAVOURITE FOODS:

Blueberry Pancakes

Last month I decided to start being a bit more creative when it comes to breakfast because there's only so much toast a girl can eat! One morning I had a real craving for pancakes and stumbled across the easiest blueberry pancake recipe ever! These take no time to whip up and, served with some maple syrup and extra blueberries, provide a delicious start to the morning.

Bruschetta

The weather in June is often very hit and miss, but on the hot summers evenings that we seemed to have a lot of last month I never fancied a heavy dinner, and my favourite light dish has to be bruschetta! Simply mix up some cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, red onions and mixed herbs with some olive oil, salt, pepper and balsamic glaze and pop onto your toasted ciabatta for a perfect summery snack.

FAVOURITE FILM / TV SHOW:

Film: Little Women (directed by Greta Gerwig)

Greta Gerwig's all-star adaptation of Little Women was released in December 2019, but I only watched it for the first time last month. I can't believe I hadn't seen it sooner! Gerwig's take on the story of the March sisters is beautifully executed and moving in every way. I absolutely loved this film.

TV: 60 Days In (available on Netflix)

'60 Days In' is an American reality program, in which six normal citizens volunteer to go undercover as inmates in the Clark County Jail for 60 days, and at the end of the experiment they give the Sheriff advice on how to improve the establishment. The participants do not know who else is undercover, and only two members of staff are aware of this experiment. Not only is this a totally binge-worthy watch, but it actually gives you an interesting insight into the American prison system.

FAVOURITE FASHION ITEMS:

Custom Trainers

Last month, custom trainers seemed to be all the rage so I couldn't help but jump on the bandwagon and get myself a pair! These hand painted butterfly Air Force 1's are the work of Manchester based MattB Customs and I couldn't recommend him enough!

Small Shoulder Bags

During the summer months, small shoulder bags are a must-have wardrobe essential! I was given the pictured bag as a birthday gift from my cousin and I've taken it everywhere with me since!

FAVOURITE ACTIVITIES:

Picnics

1st June 2020 marked the beginning of changes to Britain's lockdown rules. So, when it was announced that you could start meeting up to six friends outside, my obsession with picnics began! During this time, when there's literally no where else to go, picnics have become a great way to see your friends for a catch up. I can't count how many picnics I went on last month, but I love them!

Running

If you had to do a double take after reading this one, I don't blame you! I still can't believe that I am actually starting to enjoy running. I started 'Couch to 5k' in the middle of May, but last month I really began to start enjoying it. I'm only 5 weeks in and I can already see so much progress!

I hope you enjoyed hearing about my monthly favourites as much as I enjoyed revisiting them! This June was such a fun month for me and I can't wait to see what July has in store.
